Mappa

with Ri Dym
2021

A tablecloth, ritually dyed with a pattern of wine stains. Inspired by the pure white linens common to many Jewish homes, Mappa comments on the ancient ritual of Shmita (sabbath year). Rather than treating the inevitable stains from a Yontif observance as blemishes to be removed at all costs, Mappa celebrates them. Mappa honors the Shmita by encouraging a shift from resource-intensive purification practices like bleaching and hot water laundering to a new, resource-conscious beautification ritual.
